ISSUES AFFECTING WOMEN DEVELOPMENT

First of all, let me thank God Almighty for creating me as a woman, I want to appreciate the federal government effort, non-governmental organizations, the media, United Nations, some individuals who have been speaking in favour of the women and her development, giving her a role to play in the society.
Before I continue, I’m not a feminist as some may think, I only  want to do justice to the topic that was to me *ISSUES AFFECTING WOMEN DEVELOPMENT* and I believe that where a man is the head, a woman can be the neck “ THE SUPPORT SYSTEM”.
In our world today mostly Africa, there are various issues that render a woman as a second class being.
A woman is a female being  capable of bearing children.
To me, a woman is a masterpiece created by the Almighty God with His very own hand not words.
Being a woman is more than biology. It comes with complexity of recognizing oneself. A woman is one who does not stand for herself alone but stand for all. A woman does not compete but empowers.
A woman is one who does not go for less but stands her worth.
A woman is one who is concerned about her inward characteristics which is her beauty.
A woman is one who does not seek for attention but demands respect. A woman is one who finds a solution to every problem.
It is quite unfortunate that this golden creature of God (woman) has been subjected to various kinds of things, injuries either by men in the society or by themselves.
A woman is the engine room of development but the society has failed to recognize this fact.
The issues affecting us as women are numerous but I would mention but a few which include; lack of access to quality education.
From UNESCO. 2013 reports, 31million girls of primary school age were not in school and one out of every four young women in developing countries like Nigeria had never completed their secondary school education just because some people see female education as a waste of resources if not as a taboo.
We should know that every woman deserves equal right to quality education.
When women are educated, they will produce healthy children, get employed and make more money to support their families. An educated woman knows her rights and how to get them so she is a voice and defense to her husband, family and society.
2. Women in our society are faced with the challenge of employment in some certain areas like politics, transportation etc because there are laws or religious beliefs that ban our women from taking up employment in certain areas. Allowing women to be equally employed as their male counter parts could benefit the entire communities because women reinvest their money back into their families.
Another issue is, reproductive health and rights. Millions of women do not have access to reproductive health and rights such as family planning laws, health delivery laws etc. According to World Health Organization (WHO), about 225 million women in developing countries lack reproductive health rights and therefore so many unplanned pregnancies and over 36million abortions in the society.
When women have access  to reproductive health and rights,  the rate of abortions, maternal deaths would be reduced, the population would be controlled and resources can be chanelled for meaningful projects.
Lastly, pursuing a career. Most women in our society feels that they are only good for sex or child bearing. Most men discourage their women from taking up a professional career because of their African ideology that women are only meant to remain in the kitchen and take care of chores. The women should be enlightened that they have equal right as men to pursue a life career.
Other issues affecting women development include domestic abuse, rape, and sexual trafficking.
In conclusion, our economy today requires financial support from both men and women. For a woman to really harness her given potentials, she needs to be allowed to pursue her chosen career. When we empower a woman, we develop a nation but when when we empower a man we develop an individual.
When a woman is given an opportunity, allowed some rights and given access to leadership and choices, there would be economic growth and food security is enhanced ensuring improved prospects for the current and future generation.
Hence, women development should be encouraged, issues affecting it should be looked into. By so doing, I believe the world will be a better place.
Thank you 🙏
